It’s Halloween time! (Or not, depending on when you’re reading this). Either way, you love Halloween movies, otherwise you wouldn’t be here! I grew up a big movie buff. I watched A LOT of movies. And that love has carried over into my adult life. So, periodically, I create posts with movie and popcorn pairings because what is a movie without popcorn?! This post is the Halloween edition of the movie and popcorn pairing party. So, grab a few friends, or family, or just make some popcorn for yourself. (Hey, why not?) I’ll break down a few recipes for some of my favorite Halloween films. Let’s go!
Beetlejuice
When you think of Halloween movies, there are quite a few characters that come to mind. And, Beetlejuice is one of the most iconic. Who can forget the black and white stripe outfit he dons throughout the movie? It’s become a colloquial term even! When you see black and white stripes on pants, they become Beetlejuice pants! This popcorn pairing is no surprise, a black and white popcorn, with a little punch of personality.
What you’ll need: Popcorn, butter, everything but the bagel seasoning
This tasty popcorn is super simple (just the way I like it. #lazy). Start off by popping your popcorn and melting the butter. You need a healthy amount of butter because it [tastes good] has to help the seasoning stick. Then, dust on your everything but the bagel seasoning and you’ve got your savory black and white popcorn!
Hocus Pocus
Hocus Pocus is a Halloween favorite for sure, just ask Freeform. They basically have Hocus Pocus on repeat for the entire month of October. So, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to watch. One of the most iconic symbols of Halloween Witches is the cauldron. And, in the movie, there’s a giant one! For our popcorn though, we will go with tiny cauldrons. You can get them on Amazon here.
What You’ll Need: “Cauldrons”, Popcorn, Butter, Cotton Candy, optional: sprinkles
To create our cauldron popcorn pairing, start by popping up that corn! I use the microwave and a mug (for about a minute) to melt some butter. Distribute your popcorn among the cauldrons. Pour melted butter over the top of the popcorn. Top off with optional sprinkles and a handful of cotton candy to give the “smoke” effect. If you’re partying with a small group (or party of 1), you can get a bigger cauldron and just do one pot!
The Great Pumpkin
For the classic, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” we have to do pumpkins, right?! Bonus points for setting up a popcorn pumpkin patch. Because, as you know, Linus spends the whole night in the pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin to visit. Is your pumpkin patch sincere enough? (I bet so, it is handmade after all!) The Great Pumpkin is my favorite of all Halloween movies, so we have to do this….
What you’ll need: popcorn, marshmallows, butter, food coloring (orange or red & yellow), small tootsie rolls
The recipe for this is basically rice krispie treats. You’re going to start by popping the popcorn and setting that aside. Then, in a large pot, melt your butter and marshmallows, adding in the food coloring to make it orange. When that is all melted, add in your popcorn. This is where it gets sticky! Mix and mix until the marshmallow mixture is coating the popcorn. Use gloves if you want for the next part – coat hands or gloves with butter or butter spray. Take your hands and form small “pumpkins” or balls. Finish off by placing a tootsie roll midgie for the stem. I cut mine in half to make them shorter. If you found green candy, use that for the leaf on the pumpkin.
Ghostbusters
Who you gonna call? I mean for your movie night, duh! Ghostbusters is a classic in the category of Halloween movies. Cheesy, funny, kitschy, whatever you want to call it, Ghostbusters is a classic. And, of course we can’t watch Ghostbusters without some super Slimer popcorn!
What You’ll Need: Popcorn, butter, green chocolate melts (I got them at Walmart), green sugar sprinkles
Slimer is slimy, right? Hence the name. So, let’s start by popping that popcorn. Then we are going to melt some butter. (One minute in the microwave should do it for most). Pour your melted butter on the popcorn. Next, melt your green chocolate melts. Drizzle over popcorn. YUM! Then top with green sugar crystals!

I had to get at least one scary movie on here. This popcorn setup could really work for any of the scary Halloween movies. We are literally trying to make “bloody” popcorn. You can pair it with a Halloween themed shot for a totally adult evening. Although we are getting “bloody” with the popcorn, the red is also a nod to the classic red and white clown that everyone loves to hate.
What you’ll need: popcorn, butter, red food coloring, vanilla or marshmallow cake frosting, wine glass
Start by popping up all that glorious popcorn. Then melt your butter and pour over your popcorn. Take your cake frosting and scoop a heavy spoonful into a mug. Microwave until melted (about 30-45 seconds). Add in a heavy squeeze of red food coloring. I put in about 7-8 drops to get the deep red coloring. I didn’t mix it all the way either, just to give a little light/dark red vibe. Then, use a spoon to scoop and drip frosting on the side of a wine glass. It will run. It won’t be perfect. Just let it happen. It’s supposed to be creepy blood anyway! Then fill your wine glass with popcorn. Finally drizzle red frosting across the top of the popcorn. Drippy, creepy, goodness!
Simpson’s Treehouse of Horror
It’s time for a classic Treehouse of Horror viewing! There are so many episodes, who knows which one you’re watching. But, regardless of the episode’s theme, we can all agree that Homer loves his pink donuts. So, we are pairing this with a pink donut popcorn…..and a beer. Homer also loves beer. Just saying. For this iconic pink donut popcorn flavor, we are going to need a few things.
What you’ll need: cake frosting, red food dye, jimmies (sprinkles), butter, popcorn
First thing’s first, pop that popcorn! Melt your butter with your preferred method and pour overtop of popcorn. Melt the cake frosting (I know we did this before, but it’s so good, it deserves to be in a couple recipes). Add some red dye, but not too much. I literally used one drop. Start small as we are trying to make pink. Drizzle your pink, sweet goodness all over the popcorn. Finally, top with Jimmies (the classic sprinkle shape that can be seen on Homer’s donut). YUM!
Wrap Up
So, party peeps, there you have it. The Halloween movies popcorn pairings! Hopefully you have some fun this Halloween. It might be a weird one because of COVID.
