Hey my working Ladies! This is a day for celebration. It’s International Working Women’s Day…..side note, it’s also Popcorn Lover’s Day! So, what a better way to celebrate than revisiting our favorite working women from film and pairing them with a signature popcorn flavor! There are many types of working women – CEOs, Teachers (Shout out to my mom), Retail workers (Shout out to all my former peers!), Doctors, Moms, and so many more. Whether you go to an office or your own home, working women are strong, confident and need to be celebrated. Here is a list of a few of my favorite working women in film and a popcorn recipe to go with!

For best results use air popped popcorn. But if all else fails, microwave popcorn works! I’ve done it both ways.

Miranda Priestley, Devil Wears Prada – Zebra Popcorn

Miranda Priestley is the ultimate #GirlBoss. She unapologetically runs her business. And her wardrobe is to die for! Zebra popcorn represents both the formal black and white attire and the two sides to Miranda (she actually has a heart you know!) My zebra popcorn is a little different than the original. I use Hershey’s® White Chocolate Chunk candies and dark chocolate melted/drizzled on top. This movie is based of a book. Rather read? Get it here.

What you’ll need: Dark chocolate melts, Hershey’s White Chocolate Chunk Candies

Directions: Mix the white chocolate chunks in with the popcorn. Melt the dark chocolate (mine was in the microwave – but read the directions) and drizzle on top!

Elle Woods, Legally Blonde – Pink Popcorn

Elle Woods, although ditsy and unassuming, is driven. Everyone underestimates her and she comes out winning! And, of course, you can’t forget about her favorite color…..pink! I made an Elle Woods approved pink popcorn for your viewing. It’s got marshmallows and pink sprinkles. Just think of it like a popcorn version of a Rice Krispie. And SERIOUSLY. It’s. So. Good. Of all the popcorn experiments, this one was top two for sure.

What you’ll need: Pink Marshmallows (or regular marshmallows and a tiny bit of red food dye), Butter, Pink Sprinkles

Directions: This is just like making Rice Krispie treats, but with popcorn! Melt butter in a sauce pan, add marshmallows. Mix until smooth. Remove from heat. Add popcorn and stir. Put sprinkles on top. This one is best eaten after it cools a bit, but is still warm. Don’t make this one hours ahead, because it will harden up eventually. **Also, make sure you don’t have any popcorn kernels in the mix! They are hard to see in the marshmallow goodness. If you can’t find pink marshmallows, use regular ones and a little red food dye. Or, just leave the marshmallow it’s natural color and add a bunch of pink sprinkles – you have total creative license.

Gracie Hart, Miss Congeniality – Pizza Popcorn with Pepperoni

Gracie Hart is a ball busting, stereotype breaking, FBI agent tasked with going undercover in a beauty pageant. She’s relatable, tough, caring and loves to eat……did I say relatable? Lol. I created a pizza popcorn to go with Miss Congeniality for International Working Women’s Day. In honor of the movies line, “Pizza and beer? She can’t eat pizza and beer”. My popcorn connoisseur friend, Maggie, had the awesomely wonderful idea to make these into tiny skewers. We found that this was the best way to get all the pieces to stay together and get in your mouth!

What you’ll need: Mini Pepperonis, Mozzarella (fresh or string cheese), Olive Oil, Toothpicks

Directions: Cut up the cheese into bite size pieces. Put popcorn, mini pepperoni, and cheese onto toothpicks – mixing up the order. Drizzle with olive oil. Go crazy and add Parmesan sprinkles cheese or basil!

Jenna, Waitress – Marshmallow Mermaid Pie Popcorn

Jenna, a bit of an underdog, is such a great example of a working woman. This woman waits on people, bakes at home and eventually ends up and entrepreneur! Not only that, but this movie is directed by a woman. Girl power! This popcorn pairing is based off of one of her pies in the movie, Mermaid Marshmallow Pie. It has marshmallows (duh) and coconut and graham crackers. Enjoy! This movie is also now a musical! Get the soundtrack here to enhance your girl power afternoon. The music is written by Sara Bareilles and it is awesome!

What you’ll need: Marshmallows, Butter, Teddy Grahams, Coconut Flakes

Directions: Being a mermaid pie we are inspired by, I used green marshmallows! You could always use food coloring if you want a fun color. Melt butter in a saucepan. Add marshmallows and melt until smooth. Remove from heat and add in popcorn. Mix and add in teddy grahams and coconut flakes.

Julia Child and Julie Powell, Julie and Julia – Herbs de Provence

Julie & Julia is a movie based of a book, like many movies. It’s about a foodie who starts a blog and makes it her mission to cook everything in Julia Child’s cookbook. I mean Amy Adams and Meryl Streep…need I say more. I paired these awesome working women with a French inspired herb popcorn. Herbs de Provence is a great mix of spices and herbs – including Lavender! This real-life story is awesome. Get the book here.

What you’ll need: Butter, Herbs de Provence

Directions: Melt butter. Add in and mix Herbs de Provence. Spread over popcorn. Enjoy!

Princess Leia, Star Wars – Cinnamon Bun Popcorn

Princess Leia is not only a princess, but a rebel, a general, and a warrior. Her life is all work! In honor of the hardest working woman in the galaxy, I made a Cinnamon Bun Popcorn, based off of her classic hairdo.

What you’ll need: Butter, Sugar, Cinnamon

Directions: Melt butter. Add in sugar and cinnamon to taste. Don’t overdo the cinnamon. Mix and spread over popcorn! Super simple. Super delicious.

Honorable mention for the working men……The Secret of My Success.

This is a movie from the 80s. The good old 80s. Michael J. Fox (who you will learn, I LOVE) embodies the phrase dress for the job you want. He is a mailroom clerk, who takes over an empty corner office and starts working as an executive. Hi-jinks ensue!! Pair it with an extra buttery popcorn….you know so you can grease your way to the top! This one’s an oldie but goodie. You can rent it on Amazon Video.

Alright party people…..appreciate popcorn and celebrate working women! I have some homework for you….what do you think would be a good popcorn pairing for Wonder Woman? She deserves to be on the list too….Comment below with your ideas.

  1. These look so yummy! I’m a superfan of popcorn, and I’ve only recently discovered that there are so many different variations of this yummy treat. I’m going to first try the Herbs de Provence popcorn inspired by Julie and Julia. And I also want to see that movie. I can’t believe that I haven’t seen it yet. Thank you for writing this post!

    • Thanks Cristina! You’re going to love that movie. I’m not particularly good at cooking, but it definitely made me want to become an expert chef! (Which I am definitely still not). Lol. Also, Julie, in the movie is a blogger! Fun for us. Thank so much for reading!

  2. great post and I cannot even imagine the creativity here. I think that you nailed the flavors. Great job!

  3. Working women + Creativity + FOOD?! AMAZING! When it comes to parties & events, it feels like popcorn has been a bit forgotten. These ideas are inspired! Definitely going to pass this idea/post along because between the colors & flavors there is something for every event/theme! My favorite has to be Elle Woods – Pink Popcorn. A strong, feminine, hardworking woman and I absolutely LOVE marshmallows! I’ve never tried mixing popcorn but seems like Wonder Woman popcorn would have to have some gold leaf in there 🙂 Thanks again for great party ideas!

    • Hi Miya – Thanks so much for reading the post! It certainly was fun to theme popcorn. I love a theme…..and food. Lol. I so appreciate your comments! I literally saw some chicken wings that some company covered in gold leaf….so I think you are right on!! Such a creative idea for Wonder Woman!! 🙂
