Christmas movie night is a must during the holiday season. Whether you’re streaming, watching on cable or even busting out the old DVD, it’s a traditional activity for Christmastime! But, what is a movie without popcorn? I put together a few popcorn pairings last year. You can see them in this previous blog post. But, in THIS blog post, you can read up on the 2020 edition! I’ve done a second volume of Christmas and popcorn movie pairings below.

Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer

This classic Christmas movie takes me back to my childhood. I love the old claymation and the classic story. For this movie & popcorn pairing I went with a little cinnamon. To match the aesthetics of Rudolph, you’ll only need a few things.

What You’ll Need: popcorn, butter, cinnamon, sugar, cinnamon red hots

First, combine your sugar and cinnamon in a bowl, equal parts of each. Pop up that popcorn and melt your butter. While your butter is still warm, dust some cinnamon & sugar mix onto the popcorn. Then, top with cinnamon “rudolph nose” red hots. Enjoy!

Christmas Story

I triple dog dare you to eat this “icey” popcorn! In honor of Christmas Story’s most infamous scene, we have a frosty, ice-like popcorn recipe. Now, please don’t reenact that scene. I don’t want to hear sad stories about ice damaged tongues!

What You’ll Need: Popcorn, butter, crystal-like sprinkles, white chocolate

Pop up your popcorn and melt the butter. Drizzle the melted butter over the popcorn. Melt your white chocolate. I like to get the kind you can just microwave – from Walmart. Drizzle your white chocolate over the popcorn and top with your sanding sugar (sprinkles).

The Polar Express

I worked at Barnes & Noble for over a decade, so my first thought about The Polar Express is to remember the book. However, we did see a big screen adaptation involving everyone’s favorite dad figure, Tom Hanks. I recently had a young person tell me they were going to watch an “old movie” with their friends. I asked which movie, thinking they were going to go with It’s a Wonderful Life, or something like that. Annnnnnd, he said Polar Express. So now I feel old. But I digress. Let’s talk popcorn.

What You’ll Need: popcorn, butter, chocolate shavings (or hot chocolate mix), marshmallows

This recipe can go a few different ways depending on how fancy you want to get. First thing’s first, pop your popcorn and melt the butter. Spread that butter all over you fresh popcorn. Let it cool down a bit (or you will have a chocolatey mess). Then drop your chooclate shavings or shake some hot chocolate mix onto the popcorn. If you do the hot chocolate mix, then consider adding a little sugar, as it can sometimes not be too sweet. Lastly, drip your marshmallows all over! Obviously, you could drink with hot chocolate too!

Christmas Vacation

Every year, I watch this movie. Sometimes, multiple times. There are so many great quotes and scenes. It’s just a good old-fashion Griswold time! So, gather your family and get to making these Griswold popcorn balls to go with your movie experience.

What You’ll need: popcorn, butter, marshmallows, icing, multi-colored sprinkles or candies.

These are essentially like making a rice krispie ball. pop your popcorn and set aside. Melt your butter down in a pot. Add in your marshmallows and melt those down as well. Finally, turn off the heat and dump your popcorn in. Turn the popcorn until coated with the marshmallow mixture. Now, either use gloves or coat your hands with a PAM type spray. (Otherwise, it’s sticky city, sister). Form the popcorn into ball like shapes. No need to be perfect. Then use the icing tube to draw your tangled “light string” on your popcorn. Finally add your candy or sprinkle “lights”. Now you have that mess of lights that Clark hands to Rusty before putting up his classic Christmas display.

Die Hard

You may be thinking Die Hard, really. But yes, some adults, including myself consider this a Christmas movie night classic. It takes place around the happiest time of year, Bruce Willis gets out a “ho ho ho”, I mean, there are tributes to Christmas. But, for our popcorn recipe, we will reference the scene where the “bad guy” steals a Crunch bar.

What You’ll Need: popcorn, butter, crunch bar or bunch a crunch

There’s not much to this recipe, but that’s ok. Simplicity is good. Start off by popping your popcorn and melting butter. Let it cool (or your chocolate will melt). Then add your crunch bars!

It’s A Wonderful Life

This Christmas classic is one of my favorites. It’s been around for years to remind us all what the true meaning of Christmas is and that people are the most important thing to cherish this time of year. There’s a saying when George Bailey is letting a person into their new house and it goes, “Bread, that this house may never know hunger; Salt, that life may always have flavor, Wine, that joy & prosperity may reign forever.”

What You’ll Need: popcorn, butter, bread crumbs, salt, wine (if you want to pair with it)

You know the drill, pop that popcorn! Leave it in the bag. Melt your butter and then pour it in the popcorn bag. Add bread crumbs to your popcorn bag. Close the top and shake! Pour your popcorn out in a bowl, pour a glass of wine and enjoy!
